The city Department of Transportation is bringing a series of free bike helmet fittings and light giveaways in Brooklyn as cycling activity increases with warmer weather.

The initiative focuses on expanding access to safety gear for riders across the borough, where cycling continues to grow as a fast and affordable way to get around. At each event, trained DOT staff will fit helmets for riders of all ages and provide basic safety guidance.

The city’s helmet distribution program, launched in 2007, has provided more than 350,000 bicycle helmets through partnerships with community organizations and local elected officials. This spring’s Brooklyn events build on that effort with multiple stops in and around Prospect Park.

“A safe bike ride is a good bike ride,” said Mayor Zohran Mamdani. “Safe cycling starts with the right gear, like a well-fit helmet and bike light, and I’m excited to partner with elected officials across New York City to make sure cyclists of all ages have the tools and knowledge they need to move safely through our streets.”

Upcoming helmet giveaways include May 16 from 11:00am - 3:00pm at the Parade Grounds in Prospect Park and May 30 from 11:00am-3:00pm at the park’s West Drive entrance. Both events are expected to draw families, commuters and recreational cyclists preparing for peak riding season.

The DOT will also host evening bike light giveaways in Brooklyn, targeting busy cycling corridors to improve visibility and reduce risk. Events are scheduled for May 19 from 4:00pm - 7:00pm at the Brooklyn Bridge Promenade and May 22 from 4:00pm - 7:00pm at the Prospect Park Machate Circle bike path near Parkside Avenue.

“As the weather warms, both new and experienced cyclists should gear up to ensure every ride is safe and enjoyable,” said DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn.

Additional Brooklyn events may be announced in the coming weeks. All giveaways are weather permitting and supplies are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
