New York City Department of Transportation commissioner Mike Flynn and Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the start of work on a redesign of Bay Parkway and Cropsey Ave. in Brooklyn.

The design will speed up buses and improve service for 35,000 daily riders along the corridor, affecting routes such as the B6, B82, X28 and X38 according to a press release from the Office of the Mayor.

Currently, the B6 and B82 are the first and fourth busiest routes in Brooklyn, respectively, and operate at speeds as low as 3mph on Bay Parkway. According to the redesign plan, more than one half of workers in nearby areas use public transportation to get to work, at an average commute time of 44 minutes – above New York City average.

“Bus riders commuting between Midwood, Bensonhurst and Bath Beach deserve a fast and dignified commute, and we’re ready to help improve safety for everyone using the street,” said Mike Flynn, NYC DOT commissioner.

According to Janno Lieber, MTA chair and CEO, buses have recently achieved speeds faster than in previous years. “Next stop: Bay Parkway,” Lieber said.

From Avenue J to Shore Parkway and Cropsey Ave. from Bay Parkway to 26th Ave., new offset and curbside lanes will be constructed along with other safety enhancements.

In addition to bus improvements, NYC DOT will also add new pedestrian features along the routes, such as upgraded ramps, 18 new median islands, painted median extensions and new left turn lanes at 14 intersections.

New left turn restrictions have been associated with a 40 percent decrease in pedestrian and bike injuries, according to an NYC DOT study.

The NYC DOT plan for improvements outlines late 2026 as its timeline for concrete implementation and project monitoring. Although work has begun, a clear end date to construction has not been announced.
