A warehouse in Red Hook caught on fire Wednesday, damaging stored goods from private businesses that included refrigeration material, food, household items and manufacturing products, according to officials from the New York City Fire Department.
The FDNY got a call around 12:30pm about a warehouse fire near 700 Columbia St., and when firefighters arrived, the fire was blowing out the roofs in multiple areas, FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore said.
Over 200 firefighters and EMS personnel were brought in to control the 4-alarm fire, according to Chief of Operations Kevin Woods.
The warehouse measures about 100 feet by 1,000 feet, and initially the fire was coming out of three bays, Woods said. The high wind carried the embers through the structure with metal truss, and eventually eight to 10 bays were affected by the fire, he added.
"It was an extremely difficult operation and the [firefighters] moved in aggressively," Woods said.
This warehouse is not the Erie Basin Auto Pound operated by the New York City Police Department, Woods said.
There were no known injuries and the fire was bought under control on Wednesday.
