Brooklynites may have unclaimed funds waiting for them. The New York State Comptroller’s Office of Unclaimed Funds returns over $2 million daily from old bank accounts, utility deposits, uncashed checks, trust funds and unused gift cards.
A new, upgraded online search system now makes it easier to find and claim money, with the option to group multiple claims for faster returns.
It is now quicker to get back unclaimed funds that are $250 or less. About 70,000 checks totaling $5.4 million have already been sent statewide this year.
“This year we’re rolling out a new, more advanced and user-friendly search system that makes it even easier for people to find their money,” stat Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said. “We can even group all your claims together for faster, simpler returns.”
Staff from the Comptroller’s office will be at community events to help Brooklyn residents search for and claim funds. Those who can’t attend can use the online system or call 1-800-221-9311.
