Amidst a growing number of hate crimes in Brooklyn, Borough President Antonio Reynoso has made a public call for unity.

According to Reynoso, several anti-religious hate crimes have taken place throughout the borough over the past few weeks.

The prejudice-motivated acts were reportedly conducted as the result of escalating tensions and violence in Israel and Palestine, says the Brooklyn president.

In response to these unlawful transgressions, Reynoso issued a statement.

“It is a time of profound sadness and anxiety for the global community and here at home in Brooklyn, a borough that is home to large Jewish and Palestinian communities. Over the past few weeks, several hate crimes believed to be fueled by geopolitical events have been carried out across the borough. I am disgusted by and condemn these recent hate crimes. Harassment and abuse based on one’s identify is not the Brooklyn way,” said Reynoso.

“For generations, our borough has found its strength in diversity and Brooklynites’ ability to focus on that which unites us. The virtues of unity, compassion, and most importantly, humanity, have never been more important than they are right now. And in Brooklyn, we must hold them close, because the only way we will get through this dark time is together.”
