A Brooklyn man has been sentenced to 19 years in jail for killing his ex-wife by fatally slashing her throat, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced last week.
Romeo Borneo, a 63-year-old resident of Prospect Lefferts Gardens, received his 19-year prison sentence — along with five years of post-release supervision — from Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Abena Darkeh. The sentence comes following last month, when Borneo pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter back on April 3, 2023.
According to the investigation, on Nov. 13, 2018, at around 5:00am, at 25 Lefferts Ave., Borneo had called the police saying that he and the victim, 47-year-old Erica Renaud, had a fight and that he had been cut during the incident.
Police and emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene at the address and located Borneo, who had cut marks present on his wrist.
During a search of the apartment, police discovered the corpse of the victim, who was found beneath a stack of bloodstained pillows and linen in the living room, baring a cut throat, according to evidence.
Borneo told police that he and Renaud, who had recently called it quits on their relationship, had a fight with one another. Following this, detectives on-scene would eventually discover a broken knife in the garbage that appeared to have blood stains on it.
Later on, a medical examiner would determine that the victim's cause of death was the result of a neck wound, which led to a fatal amount of blood loss.
“With today’s sentence, the defendant has been held responsible for the vicious and deadly stabbing of an innocent woman and mother. Today’s lengthy prison sentence is a step toward justice for the victim’s family and friends,” said Gonzalez.
