A Brooklyn man has been indicted for allegedly murdering a two-year-old boy, District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced last week.

23-year-old Latrell Lewis, a resident of Crown Heights, was arraigned in Brooklyn Supreme Court and faces several charges including second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, second-degree manslaughter, and endangering the welfare of a child.

According to Gonzalez, the alleged incident took place during the morning of Aug. 27, 2023.

During that day, at 6:30am, Lewis’ girlfriend reportedly left her home in Bergen Beach to go to work, leaving behind her two-year-old son, Nasir Carter Paris, in the care of Lewis.

Later that same morning, Lewis reportedly contacted the mother, informing her that Paris was allegedly complaining about having stomach pain.

Lewis then proceeded to call an ambulance, which transported the child to Brookdale Hospital. The boy would later be pronounced dead at approximately 12:54pm, according to the indictment.

An autopsy by the Office of the New York City Medical Examiner determined that the child’s death was caused by blunt force injuries to the head and torso, including a depressed skull fracture, hemorrhaging between the skull and brain, lacerations to the liver, among others.

In addition to this incident, Lewis has also been charged for a prior situation back on April 22, 2023, in which Paris sustained a spiral fracture of his femur while under Lewis’ alleged care. The Brooklyn man has been accused of not attempting to seek any medical attention for the child.

“Little Nasir was a helpless, defenseless child entrusted by his mother to the defendant’s care while she was at work. Instead of ensuring the toddler’s safety, the defendant allegedly beat him so severely that he tragically died,” said District Attorney Gonzalez.

“We are determined to see that this defendant is held responsible for this senseless crime, and our hearts are with his mother and loved ones as they grieve this horrific loss.”
