A Brooklyn man is facing several charges for allegedly stabbing an 83-year-old man to death, in addition to assaulting other individuals, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced.
27-year-old Boerum Hill resident, Joevani Vale, has been arraigned on an indictment in which he has been charged with second-degree murder, second-degree assault, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, third-degree attempted assault, second-degree harassment, third-degree attempted assault, as well as fourth-degree stalking.
According to Gonzalez, the majority of the alleged attacks involving Vale occurred back on April 8, 2023.
During that day, at approximately 12:47pm, Vale allegedly followed a woman walking around Third Avenue and Pacific Street in Brooklyn, and asked if she was lost. After telling him she was not lost, the woman attempted to walk away, to which Vale allegedly continued to follow her, prompting the woman to stop and let him pass. As Vale walked by the woman, it is alleged that he punched her in the shoulder, according to the investigation.
Later on, at around 1:25pm, it is alleged that Vale walked behind another woman, near 134 Nevins Street, and slashed her on the back of her thigh. The woman would later be treated at a local hospital.
Following the second incident, at around 2:20pm, Vale allegedly followed 83-year-old Ramon Cintron into an elevator at the Wyckoff Gardens Housing Development — where the two of them lived. According to the investigation, Vale allegedly stabbed Cintron approximately 30 times in his neck, torso, back, and legs.
The investigation indicates that Cintron attempted to escape the elevator, but Vale allegedly kicked the victim back into the structure before fleeing the scene.
Vale would be arrested on April 11, 2023, and placed in a psychiatric ward at Maimonides Medical Center, where he was guarded and escorted about by a couple of New York City police officers. On April 12, after using the restroom, Vale allegedly made a fist and struck one of the officers in the face, adding to the list of charges.
“I am heartbroken that 83-year-old Ramon Cintron died in such a violent and horrifying way and my condolences go out to his family, friends and neighbors," said Gonzalez. "We will now seek to hold the defendant responsible for the murder of Mr. Cintron, as well as the other alleged attacks with which he is charged.”
Vale is currently being held without bail, with his next court appearance scheduled for Sept. 29, 2023.
