Brooklyn Community Board 14 just hosted its 16th Annual Youth Conference event at the Brooklyn College Student Center on April 3.
The local community board — which represents the areas of the Flatbush, Midwood, and parts of Kensington — said the purpose of the conference is to give local youths (between ages 14-21) greater agency by providing them with educational and networking opportunities, along with a space to learn about available resources.
The event featured numerous workshops and mock interviews. In addition, various organizations, businesses, and agencies were in attendance to offer up resources, including information on topics like college readiness, financial literacy, career planning, social justice and more.
The conference attendees also had the unique chance to meet and connect with various local leaders, educators and professionals.
“Our Annual Youth Conference is CB14’s cornerstone event for direct youth engagement, providing support for professional development and job readiness and a niche entry point for local civic engagement,” said Jo Ann Brown, the chair of CB14.
“The robust hum of excitement generated by five hundred curious youths is exhilarating to be surrounded by each and every year. And when we see alums of the conference from years past tabling for an agency or a community partner, we are reaffirmed that this is an essential outreach point for our board and community partners.”
CB14 said over 50 organizations, agencies and businesses attended this year's event. The community board also announced that, to date, more than 350 local youth registered for the conference.
“CB14’s Annual Youth Conference is the perfect way to welcome in the spring with new hope and excitement for the future,” said Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso.
“With workshops, mock interviews, and plenty of networking opportunities, it’s programs like these that can kickstart careers and lifelong passions. I’m so grateful to CB14 Chair Jo Ann Brown and all the members and volunteers who have invested their time, resources, and expertise in our young Brooklynites.”
