Superintendent Brendan T. Mims of Brooklyn Community School District 16 has been honored with the distinguished Hon. Albert Vann Vanguard Award by the New York State Association of the Black, Puerto Rican, & Asian Legislators, Inc.

The award is presented annually to individuals who demonstrate “dedication to improving the image of the African American community as a trailblazer,” according to a news release.

Superintendent Mims was honored at the 53rd Annual Legislative Conference on February 18, in Albany, New York.

"This award is a testament to the collaborative spirit and hard work of everyone in our community who stands in partnership with us for children," Mim said. "We stand on the shoulders of giants and it is our job to lead with excellence, empathy and excellence."

Stefani Zinerman, Assemblymember for Brooklyn Assembly District 56, celebrated Superintendent Mims.

"People who decide to become teachers and educators and pour into our young people and create the next generation of leaders are special people... and this is a special man," said Zinerman. "Not just because he came up in the system that Al Vann helped create, but because he hit the ground running, and he did everything he needed to do to get in touch with everybody; child, parent, community. He carries community in his blood.”
