Bay Ridge Playground Reopens After Major Renovation

The Russell Pedersen Playground reopened with major upgrades, including modern amenities and improved infrastructure.

The Russell Pedersen Playground in Bay Ridge reopened on July 17 following a $5.4 million upgrade by NYC Parks. The renovation includes new playground structures, adult fitness equipment and improved infrastructure such as lighting, drainage and water services.

The renovations came as a result of outdated infrastructure, poor drainage and deteriorating play surfaces. The bathrooms were unsanitary and did not meet accessibility standards. The overall space had not seen major upgrades in decades. These issues prompted a full overhaul to create a safer and more modern environment for the community.

"All New Yorkers, regardless of ZIP code, deserve access to beautiful, safe, and engaging green spaces," said NYC Parks Brooklyn Borough Commissioner Martin Maher. "This renovation has made Russell Pedersen Playground more resilient and more welcoming to New Yorkers of all ages, making it easier for visitors to enjoy all the benefits of time out in the great outdoors."

The project upgrade also introduced a new corner entrance to improve park access and circulation. The various additional features range from shaded areas, lowered perimeter fencing to new paving. The improved drainage system now encompasses pervious sections plus upgraded infrastructure in the basketball and handball courts to better manage stormwater.

An additional $4 million has been allocated for future improvements at the site.

The park is named after Russell Pedersen, who was a local resident and Fort Hamilton High School alumnus. He volunteered at the park before serving in the Vietnam War. Unfortunately, he was killed in action in 1968; hence, the playground was renamed in his honor the following year.
