New York State Assemblymember Stefani L. Zinerman announced on Oct. 27 that she will seek through a community-driven write-in campaign during the Nov. 3 general election.

Zinerman lost the Democratic primary to Eon Tyrell Huntley despite receiving more than 5,000 votes, and now invites District 56 residents to write-in her name on the ballot.

According to a press release from The Vibrant 56 Coalition, Zinerman’s decision came as response to calls from Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights residents to continue her work after more than six years in office.

“Six years ago, I asked this community for the opportunity to serve,” Zinerman said the press release. “Today, members of this community have asked me to continue. I accept that responsibility with gratitude, humility and determination.

“This decision is about protecting what we have built together and ensuring that the people of Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights determine their future.”

Zinerman also emphasized that her write-in candidacy is not an attempt to revisit the primary democratic election, but rather an invitation for all voters to look past political party lines for the district’s future.

Zinerman cited the affordability crisis, housing instability, economic uncertainty and growing political divisions as reasons for her campaign, saying that those issues require experienced leadership that unites residents across political parties.

She recalled her experience during the 2021 COVID-19 pandemic. “We did not ask people what political party they belonged to before helping them. We asked what they needed and how we could help.”

She outlined her five upcoming priorities: housing stability; education and lifelong opportunity; good jobs and economic mobility; ownership and community wealth; and healthy, safe and connected communities.

Early voting continues for Brooklyn residents until Nov. 1. Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
