New York State Assemblymember Helene E. Weinstein, who represented Brooklyn's 41st Assembly District for over four decades, announced her retirement on Monday.

Having served as the longest-running woman official in state Assembly history, Weinstein said that she would not be seeking re-election after her current term.

“After close to 44 years serving the residents of the 41st Assembly District and the people of New York, I have decided to retire at the end of this term. I want to thank all of my constituents throughout the years for placing their confidence in me. I also wish to thank all of my current and past staff members both in Albany and Brooklyn who have assisted me and our community throughout my years in office,” Weinstein said in a statement.

“It has been the greatest honor to serve as an Assemblymember.”

Weinstein was the first woman to head the Assembly’s Judiciary Committee, as well as serving as the first female chair of the Ways & Means Committee, to name a few.

In light of Weinstein’s announcement, the Brooklyn Democratic Party said that she will be remembered for her countless advocacy efforts in support of New Yorkers.

"As the longest serving woman in the NYS Assembly, Helene E. Weinstein has profoundly uplifted Brooklyn and immensely elevated New Yorkers for over four decades,” said Brooklyn Democratic Party Chair Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn.

“The Brooklyn Democratic Party is deeply appreciative and thankful for Assemblymember Weinstein's selfless and steadfast service, and although she will be missed in the legislature, we look forward to working with Weinstein as she starts a new great chapter in life.”
