NYC Mayor Eric Adams cancelled his trip to the U.S.-Mexico border after the U.S. State Department flagged safety concerns about the city he was due to visit.

According to the Gothamist, a City Hall spokesperson said the executive director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande, Sister Norma Pimentel, invited the mayor to visit her team at the Texas border. Ahead of the trip on Friday, Adams said he would meet, “national immigration leaders who all applaud what we have done.”

Adams was scheduled to depart on Saturday in what would have been his second trip to the border to meet immigration leaders as the city continues to grapple with migrant crisis. A City Hall spokesperson reportedly said the department expressed, "safety concerns at one of the cities we were going to visit in Mexico."

The publication reported that Adams first visited the southern border in January of last year when he went to El Paso, Texas, to assess the city's handling of migrants.
