Elected officials and housing organizations celebrated affordable housing milestones at the Christian Cultural Center’s campus in East New York on Oct. 15.
The ribbon cutting ceremony welcomed 386 permanently affordable homes to the neighborhood and marked the next phase of the project, which will bring 453 more affordable homes and a childcare facility, according to the Office of the Mayor.
“Today, we’re celebrating a huge milestone for the East New York community — a place where generations of New Yorkers will be able to live and flourish as a result of bold choices and a grand vision for New York’s future,” Hochul said.
Assemblymember Nikki Lucas, representing East New York, said that the development “will help ensure that families who have built their lives in East New York can continue to live, work and thrive here.”
The announcement took place at Innovative Urban Village — the site of the new housing and large-scale mixed-use community development project that continues to grow.
“Innovative Urban Village shows what we can accomplish when we build housing alongside the resources families need to thrive,” Mamdani said. “We will keep building on this investment, creating and preserving affordable homes at the scale that New Yorkers need across the five boroughs.”
The new housing units come after Mamdani announced his “Block by Block: The Housing Plan for a New Era” plan in May, which calls for 200,000 affordable homes throughout the next ten years, and the preservation of another 200,000.
The new affordable homes were designed by Practice for Architecture and Urbanism. Phase 1A of the plan will incorporate all-electric heating and cooling to the homes, along with solar panels, green roofs, electric-vehicle charging stations and more.
While the first 386 units are complete, New12 reported that the next round of housing, along with the childcare center, is expected to open in the Spring of 2027.
