Community-based organization The Opportunity Hub on Thursday opened their annual farm stand at Spring Creek Towers, bringing access to low-cost, fresh and healthy food to residents in Starrett City and East New York.
Every vegetable and herb offered at the stand is grown on the grounds of Spring Creek Towers, demonstrating how urban agriculture can yield real, tangible benefits for residents right where they live.
The Opp Hub Farm also offers programming like the Learning Garden, which offers young people hands-on lessons about biodiversity, plant life cycles, healthy eating, and food justice, and the Older Adult Garden Club, and numerous seasonal workshops and volunteer days.
“Access to fresh, healthy food shouldn’t be dictated by your zip code or income,” said Nanda Prabhakar, executive director of the Opportunity Hub. “By growing produce right where our residents live, we’re addressing barriers to food access and supporting our community when they need it most. From young people learning about food justice in our Learning Garden to the connections made in our Older Adult Gardening Club, The Opportunity Hub treats urban agriculture as a complete, community-wide ecosystem. The Farmstand provides the immediate, critical relief families need right now, while our broader programming empowers East New York with the education and shared spaces to build long-term resilience.”
