*Monday, January 13, is the next meeting of the Parks and Recreation Committee for Community Board 2, at Brooklyn Hospital Dining Room A& B, Dekalb Avenue at St. Felix Street, 6:00pm. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

*Tuesday, January 14, is the 81st Precinct Community Council meeting, covering eastern Bed-Stuy, at 794 Monroe Street at 7:00pm. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

*Tuesday, January 15, at 6:00pm, the Macon Library will presents a day of "leadership, activism and service," honoring the Life & Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Join the friends of the library to:

  • Watch rare footage of Dr. King's powerful speeches
  • Experience the "freedom" music that provided the soundtrack to the movement
  • Salute civil rights leaders of the past in a libation and birthday cake tribute... and more!

*Wednesday, January 15, is civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, although it is observed this year on Monday, January 20.

*Wednesday, January 15 is the next meeting of the Land Use Committee for Community Board 2, at NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering, 5 Metrotech Center, Room LC 400, at 6:00pm. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

*Friday, January 17, New York City's largest public celebration of the great civil rights leader returns to the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House, co-presented with Borough President Eric Adams and Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York. This year's celebration features a keynote address by author, professor, and activist Angela Davis, with musical performances by modern jazz artist José James and the BCCC Singers of the Brooklyn Christian Cultural Center. Following the events in the Opera House, there will be a free screening in the BAM Rose Cinemas of the documentary Free Angela Davis and All Political Prisoners (2012), including an introduction by with Angela Davis.
