According to the New York State Department of Health, "About, 1,200 NYS infants under one year of age die each year." Of those deaths, 7.5% are referred to as Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths (SUID) due to unsafe sleep practices or an unidentifiable cause, which is labeled as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
On average, every year, 48 infants die from a sleep-related injury or related to the infant's sleep position and environment, which is approximately 80% of all infant deaths in NYC that are injury related, and the number has not changed significantly over the years.
The causes of SIDS remain unidentifiable; however, there are several risk factors and characteristics of SIDS. To learn more about SIDS, Caribbean Women's Health Association, Inc. through sponsorship by Healthy Start Brooklyn, cordially invites your to a Safe Sleep Event to raise awareness of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
