NYC's First Lady Chirlane McCray visited the Brooklyn Botanic Garden recently to learn more about the Garden Apprentice Program (GAP).
Accompanied by BBG President Scot Medbury, along with other members of BBG, McCray received a private tour of the thriving children's garden where the budding horticulturalists worked on their plots.
GAP is a hands-on apprenticeship for students, grades 8-11, focused on horticulture and created by the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. The program includes four tiers: tier 1 students assist instructors in the Children's Garden programs; tier 2 students works along with educators to conduct scientific research; tier 3 students create education stations for visitors in BBG; and tier 4 students work as paid staff members in the Children's Garden after completing tier 3.
Climate change, sustainable agriculture and identifying the medicinal properties of certain plants were just some of the topics studied by the GAP students and presented to the First Lady.
