NYPD Chief of Department Terence A. Monahan announced on Wednesday that additional police officers will be dispatched to four high crime areas in Brooklyn as part of the department's Summer All-Out program.
Now in its fifth year, a total of 287 officers, 70 more than last year, will be sent to 11 precincts citywide.
In Brooklyn, additional cops will help Flatbush's 67th Precinct, Brownsville's 73rd Precinct, East New York's 75th Precinct and Bedford Stuyvesant's 79th Precinct to keep violence under control for the summer months. The officers, who normally are on administrative duty, have been given a quick refresher course on neighborhood policing and de-escalation techniques and will be patrolling the streets through September 6, three weeks longer than previously.
"The Summer All-Out allows the NYPD to keep the city's crime reduction momentum going as we enter the summer months," said Monahan. "This year, we have added more officers than ever before and extended the program by three additional weeks. Working hand-in-hand with community members and their fellow cops, these additional officers will focus on further reducing crime and violence."
During Summer All-Out in 2018, the city experienced significant reductions in shootings and murders in commands where additional police officers were assigned, officials said; last year, there was a 36 percent reduction of murders and a 16 percent reduction of shootings.
In March, the NYPD unveiled a plan to combat a surge in homicides that occurred during the first quarter of 2019. Analyzing the city's murders and non-fatal shootings this year so far, the department decided to send at least eight more cops to four precincts, including the 79th Precinct. According to officials, Brooklyn North had some of the biggest trouble as an area where the murder rate tripled compared to the number of murders recorded during the same period in 2018.
