The first series of public and topic-specific group meetings for the Atlantic Avenue Mixed-Use Plan has been announced.

The meetings will take place over the course of three separate days and focus on specific topics related to AAMUP — a community-driven proposal looking to bring substantial public and private investment to the Atlantic Avenue area between Vanderbilt and Nostrand avenues.

The series of meetings will kick off on Feb. 13, with the first public gathering of community members focusing on the creation of housing and income-restricted housing.

On Feb. 15, the second meeting will take place and spotlight topics such as job creation and support services.

The final meeting, scheduled for Feb. 16, will bring together community stakeholders to discuss infrastructure needs and other various improvement needs for Atlantic Avenue and surrounding neighborhoods.

According to a release, the zoning rules in the 16-block Atlantic Avenue area have been mostly unchanged since 1961. As a result, new housing and mixed-use building projects have not been allowed to occur in the Brooklyn area that neighbors Bed-Stuy, Crown Heights and Prospect Heights.

The objective of AAMUP is to provide new homes, employment, and better infrastructure to the area. It aims to achieve this by bringing in mixed-use properties that will provide housing for residents, along with options for retail, commercial or industrial uses.

The meetings — announced by Council Member Crystal Hudson and Department of City Planning Director Dan Garodnick — will look to progress the plans forward by gathering community input.

“The start of the Atlantic Avenue Mixed-Use Plan working group meetings mark the beginning of an exciting and dynamic process that will yield tangible, community-developed plans that will help us create a more vibrant and inclusive Atlantic Avenue corridor,” said Hudson.

“I’m eager to see the vision our community puts forth, and I encourage all of my neighbors living in Community Boards 2, 3 and 8 to join these meetings and make their voices heard.”

The three in-person meetings will occur at P.S. 9, The Sarah Smith Garnet School. Each meeting will run from 6:30pm-9:00pm.
