As excitement builds around the New York Knicks’ potential return to the NBA Finals, ticket prices at Madison Square Garden have reached astonishing levels, according to a report from NJ.com.
The report says one buyer paid more than $116,000 for two courtside tickets to a potential Knicks NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden — a price that underscores just how much demand has surged as the franchise moves deeper into the playoffs.
According to ticket marketplace data cited by NJ.com, the seats were listed at roughly $58,000 each for a possible Game 5 of the NBA Finals in New York. The Knicks have not reached the Finals since 1999 and have not won an NBA championship since 1973, adding to the frenzy surrounding the team’s postseason run.
The report noted that resale prices across the board have climbed sharply, with even upper-level seats costing thousands of dollars. Lower-bowl seats for potential Finals games were reportedly listed well above $10,000 on several ticket platforms.
Sports business analysts told NJ.com that the combination of the Knicks’ long championship drought, the team’s large fan base and the celebrity appeal of Madison Square Garden has created one of the hottest ticket markets in recent NBA history.
“This is the perfect storm for ticket demand,” Chris Leyden, director of growth marketing at SeatGeek, told NJ.com.
The report also highlighted how celebrity interest and national attention have intensified throughout the Knicks’ playoff run, with stars regularly appearing courtside at Madison Square Garden during postseason games.
While some fans celebrated the team’s success, others online reacted with disbelief at the soaring ticket costs, questioning whether average New Yorkers could realistically afford to attend a Finals game in person.
Still, demand has remained high despite the prices. Ticket experts told NJ.com that major playoff moments involving historically successful or long-struggling franchises often create emotional buying behavior among fans eager to witness history firsthand.
The Knicks’ playoff success has also provided an economic boost for businesses surrounding Madison Square Garden, with bars, restaurants and hotels benefiting from increased crowds and tourism tied to the postseason atmosphere.
Whether the Knicks ultimately reach the NBA Finals remains to be seen, but the resale market already reflects the level of anticipation surrounding the possibility of championship basketball returning to New York City for the first time in decades.
