For the next two weeks, Crown Heights locals are funding the daily cleaning of Kingston Ave to beautify the streets during Tishrei, the first month of the civil Hebrew calendar.

The street will be cleaned each morning between Lefferts Ave and Eastern Parkway by a private street cleaning company, COLlive reports.

The effort was started by Crown Heights resident Sam Stern with a $1,000 donation, and he is calling on other neighbors to join in funding the initiative. He told COLlive the response had so far been overwhelming and hundreds of other residents had donated and expressed support.

Between the Tishrei festivities and foot traffic, it is simply too much for the NYC Sanitation to handle and the avenue looks like a dump, he said.

This is going to make Kingston Ave. beautiful and clean.

He added that a number of people had asked him to continue the effort throughout the year, which he said he hopes can be the case.

The community simply becomes overwhelmed with guest festivals and traffic and our Sanitation department doesnt apply more resources so the streets become disgusting, he told COLlive.

He said the impact of outdoor dining and reduced alternate side parking had added to the fact that residents must take cleaning into their own hands.

If we want to be a beautiful community that proudly represents who we are and how we feel about the Rebbes shechuna, we need your help, he said.
