A new housing project in East New York has brought 13 new affordable one- to three-bedroom homes to the neighborhood to give residents the opportunity to become homeowners.
According to the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), Councilmember Inez Barron, SRBuild LLC, the Community Preservation Corporation and the Urban Investment Group within Goldman Sachs, who worked together on the $13 million Blake Hendrix development, the 13 new homeownership opportunities include 30 units, and there are also 17 new affordable rental units for low- and moderate-income households.
The project is the latest financed by HPD to transform formerly underutilized City-owned land into affordable homes for the local community, the department said. The homeownership units, designed by DeLaCour, Ferrara & Church Architects, are affordable to residents earning between 90 and 110% of Area Median Income.
Councilmember Inez Barron said in a city where affordable housing was sorely needed, "I am proud that 30 units of housing are being made available to low-income persons in East New York."
"Homeownership, in particular, gives families in need the opportunity to establish enduring financial safety and build intergenerational wealth," she said.
"We are proud that land left vacant and unsightly for decades has finally been transformed to benefit the community in this way."
HPD Commissioner Louise Carroll added that homeownership offered a "real sense of security to families, and a foundation for building a better life for their children and their community."
