A Brooklyn couple were married on Saturday at the Black Lives Matter mural on Fulton Street in Bed-Stuy after being inspired to "put some happiness and love back into the universe," reports Patch.
Makeita Wilson, of Brownsville, and Shancton Thompson, of Fort Greene, were engaged in April 2019, but were forced to postpone their July wedding due to COVID-19. Wilson says that the idea for the symbolic ceremony came to her after a conversation she had at the site of the mural with her 10-year-old daughter about victims of racist violence such as Emmett Till and George Floyd. She wanted to spread some positivity despite "all the tragedies that's going on in the the world."
The beautiful idea came to life at Saturday's ceremony, where the two showed that "Black Love Matters" in front of about 30 socially distanced friends and family members.
For Thompson and his family the symbolism of the event means a lot. "I have an aunt who was in an era where she's picking cotton, so to hear her talk about that and to be here right now....even though we're going through a lot, we're doing it," he told News 12 after the ceremony.
