The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) terminated millions in grant money it already allocated to New York City that went towards caring for asylum seekers, saying the money was used to support illegal immigration.

In a letter sent to the city on April 1, FEMA said it will claw back $106 million, which is on top of the $80 million the federal agency removed earlier this year, the New York Times reported.

The letter from Cameron Hamilton, FEMA's acting administrator, said the grant money provided support to "illegal aliens that is not consistent" with the mission of President Donald Trump.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said the city is looking into legal action, the paper reported.

"Like their previous actions clawing back appropriated funds, these steps are unlawful, and the New York City Law Departments is currently determining the best legal recourse to take to ensure that this money remains in New York City, where it was allocated and belongs," the mayor said in a statement.

The city's lawsuit to get back the $80 million is still active, the newspaper said.
