Brooklyn Radio Personality Darren Greggs Dies at 62

The broadcasting and inspirational music communities are mourning the passing of veteran New York radio personality Darren Greggs, a respected announcer, programmer and advocate whose voice and influence helped shape gospel radio for decades. He died on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, after a short battle with lymphoma. He was 62.

A graduate of Brooklyn College, where he earned an Associates and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Radio and Television, Greggs dedicated his life to broadcasting and serving the community through the power of media. He became widely recognized for his work at decades work at both WWRL 1600 AM and later as program director of then WTHE 1520 AM, (now WJDM 1530AM) where he championed gospel/inspirational music, informed listeners, and supported both emerging and established artists.

Known to many in the gospel and Holy Hip-Hop community as "D-Rock," Greggs was an early contributor to the movement and remained a passionate advocate for faith-based music and ministry throughout his career. He also previously served as a member of the Gospel Announcers Guild of the Gospel Music Workshop of America, joining fellow broadcasters committed to advancing gospel music and excellence in religious broadcasting.

Beyond the microphone, Greggs, an Ocean Hill resident, was known for his excellent voice, professionalism, comedy, generosity, and unwavering encouragement of artists, ministries, friends and broadcasters. His warm personality, unmistakable voice, and dedication to the industry earned him the admiration and respect of colleagues throughout New York and across the music community.

Darren Greggs is survived by his beloved son, Christopher Greggs; his sister, Inez; his cherished niece, Erica; several beloved grandchildren and a host of extended family members, friends, colleagues, artists, and listeners whose lives were touched by his kindness, mentorship, and enduring commitment to gospel broadcasting.

A celebration of Darren Greggs' life will be held on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at 9:00am at Frank R. Bell Funeral Home, 536 Sterling Pl. in Brooklyn. 

The broadcasting community has lost a trusted voice, but Darren Greggs' legacy will continue through the countless lives he impacted, the artists he supported, and the generations of broadcasters he inspired. Rest in peace, Darren Greggs. Your voice may be silent, but your legacy will continue to be heard for generations.
