Lifeguard qualifying tests for summer 2026 are underway across New York City and will conclude in late February, according to NYC Parks.

Candidates who pass the qualifying exam become eligible to enter lifeguard training for the 2026 summer season. New lifeguards will earn $22 per hour and receive a $908 training payment upon successfully completing the summer season.

NYC Parks is conducting qualifying tests at indoor pools throughout the five boroughs, including recreation centers and NYC Department of Education facilities. All applicants must pass a swim test and a vision exam to move forward in the process.

"We're calling on brave New Yorkers to serve the city by safeguarding swimmers at our beaches and outdoor pools," said NYC Parks Commissioner Iris Rodriguez-Rosa. "Keeping the public safe is our top priority and we need your help filling those lifeguard chairs. Accept the challenge and sign up for a qualifying test today!”

To qualify, candidates must be at least 16 years old by July 18, 2026, have minimum vision of 20/30 in one eye and 20/40 in the other without corrective lenses and be able to swim 50 yards in 50 seconds or less using proper form.

The path to becoming an NYC Parks lifeguard includes three steps: qualifying, training and guarding.

After registering for and passing a qualifying test, candidates may enroll in a 16-session training program focused on swimming endurance, speed and lifesaving techniques. Certification is awarded after passing a final swim test. NYC Parks also offers a free Swim Prep program to help applicants prepare for the qualifying exam.

Upon successful completion of training, participants may be offered a full-time position at a city beach or outdoor pool. Beaches open Memorial Day weekend, while outdoor pools open in late June. All facilities close the Sunday after Labor Day.

Additional information and registration details are available on the NYC Parks Become a Lifeguard webpage.
