Sheepshead Bay Educational Campus celebrated its newly renovated athletic complex on Oct. 7, with a ribbon cutting ceremony. City Council Member Mercedes Narcisse and NYC Public Schools Deputy Chancellor Kevin Moran were in attendance.
The project replaces a field installed in 2000 with new turf, a track, drainage improvements and the campus’s first functioning scoreboard since 2002. The facilities will service football, soccer and track and field athletes at SBEC, which includes the United Charter High School for Advanced Math & Science III.
At the ribbon cutting, students and athletes chanted in excitement. Cheerleaders ran through a choreographed chant on the new field.
“This investment will shape athletics at SBEC for years to come,” said Nissi Jonathan, principal of UCHS AMS III. “Our student athletes pour a tremendous amount of time, hard work and pride into representing our campus, and they deserve facilities that reflect that commitment.”
The facilities were slightly over budget, according to Kevin Moran, but he said at the opening that “they were happy to deliver it.”
The field, located at 3000 Ave. X in Brooklyn, is home to the defending PSAL 3A champion Sheepshead Bay Educational Campus Sharks football team.
“The next step, according to coach McKiney, is to light this thing up on some Friday night,” said Moran, met with cheers from staff and students on the field during the ribbon cutting.
United Charter High Schools serves thousands of students across The Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens.
