The New York Landmarks Conservancy will host its 16th annual Sacred Sites Open House on May 16 and 17, offering free access to houses of worship across the state.
The event highlights the theme Holding Community Memories, focusing on how religious spaces preserve local history through architecture, art and ongoing community use.
Congregations and historic sites will open their doors for guided tours, lectures and musical programs, while also sharing archival materials that reflect generations of neighborhood life. Visitors can also explore sites independently, with many locations showcasing notable design features and artwork rarely seen by the public.
“Open House Weekend is an invitation to explore the architecture, art and history within religious buildings in your community,” said Peg Breen, president of the New York Landmarks Conservancy. “It’s an easy and enjoyable way to be a tourist in your own town.”
Several Brooklyn locations are participating. Brooklyn Grace Church will be open both days, with organ demonstrations scheduled Saturday and a recital Sunday hosted by the American Guild of Organists.
St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church will welcome visitors throughout the weekend and Old First Reformed Church will be open Sunday from 1:00pm to 5:00pm.
At The Green-Wood Cemetery, visitors can attend a panel discussion and guided mini trolley tour from 2:00pm to 4:30pm, along with an art installation on display in the Historic Chapel.
The annual open house continues to spotlight the cultural and architectural importance of religious institutions across New York, giving residents an opportunity to experience spaces that serve as both historic landmarks and active community centers.
