To celebrate Earth Day, the Brooklyn Museum will host Forces of Nature: Create, Move and Renew on April 19, featuring hands-on activities exploring humanity’s relationship with the natural world.

The event coincides with the final week of Oliver Jeffers: Life at Sea, a family-friendly participatory installation in the museum’s Education Gallery. The work is inspired by Jeffers’ 2017 children’s book Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth, which introduces themes of environmental awareness and care for the planet.

The program, from 12:00pm to 5:00pm, will include art-making sessions, Capoeira workshops, herbal remedies, ear acupuncture, pop-up talks and other activities, including an appearance by Jeffers.

The installation transforms the gallery into an underwater environment that began sparsely populated and has grown over time through contributions from visitors. Museumgoers have added hand-made sea life, gradually building a collaborative seascape that now fills the space with color and detail.

Based in Belfast, Northern Ireland and Brooklyn, Jeffers is an award-winning artist, illustrator and writer whose work often blends storytelling with environmental themes.
