Celebrating Haitian Flag Day In The Heart Of Broooklyn

The storm may have interrupted the evening, but it could not stop the celebration.

Despite yesterday’s downpour, the Haitian Flag Day celebration on May 20th at the beautiful Prospect Park Boathouse shined brightly.

In honor of the 223rd anniversary of the Haitian flag, the evening brought rich culture, music, art, and the spirit of Haiti through live performances, dancing, vendors, delicious Haitian cuisine and community celebration. Hosted by Haiti Cultural Exchange in partnership with Prospect Park Alliance, the celebration featured live performances by Mizik Ayiti, Mikaëlle Aimée, Okai Musik, Rasin Okan, Bobby Raymond & Markus Schwartz, with sounds by DJ 2CENT.

The storm may have interrupted the evening, but it could not stop the celebration. Once the rain started the event moved indoors where the festivities continued. Haitian Flag Day at the Boathouse was a reminder that Haitian culture stands strong through every storm. “As the daughter of Haitian immigrants and an immigrant myself, this celebration is deeply personal to me. Haiti is more than a place on a map,” said Rita Joseph, Brooklyn’s 40th district council member.

“It is a story of courage, pride and perseverance and a people whose spirit have shaped communities.”
