Bay Ridge resident Sebastian Mazeneth captured the 143-pound open class title at the New York Ring Masters Championships after a grueling seven-fight winning streak.

The 22-year-old welterweight capped off his title run with back-to-back victories over Angel Perez of Mendez Boxing Gym first on April 10, at Madison Square Garden, and again on April 12, at New York Fight Club in Gravesend, according to a press release. The wins earned Mazeneth a coveted spot in the National Golden Gloves tournament, set for May 12–17 in Tulsa, Okla.

“Many times I’ve been overlooked, doubted and seen as the ‘tough guy who can’t box’ but that never deterred me. I work harder than anyone and had no doubt that it would show one day. I proved a lot of people wrong,” said Mazeneth, who boxes out of the Sweatbox Gym in Sunset Park.

Mazeneth began competing just two years ago, finishing runner-up in his first tournament in 2023 and taking silver at the USA Boxing Summer Festival in Kansas later that year. In May 2024, he scored his first international win by knocking out former Danish national champion Mads Christensen in Nuuk, Greenland.

Born in Barranquilla, Colombia, Mazeneth moved to Brooklyn at age 7 and later starred on the football field at Fort Hamilton High School, earning All City and New York All Star honors in 2020 and 2021.

Outside the ring, Mazeneth is finishing his senior year at the College of Staten Island, where he is majoring in finance and set to graduate later this year.

“This is just the start,” Mazeneth said. “Me and my team are getting right back to work. This makes me happy, but more than anything, it just made me even hungrier.”
