A special Mother's Day celebration for individuals who have experienced the loss of their mothers will happen on Saturday, May 10 in East Flatbush.
The nonprofit Help Hearts Heal, alongside state Senator Kevin Parker, will hold a Gone But Not Forgotten Mother's Day celebration, bringing together community members for a day of reflection, connection and celebration of the lives of mothers who have passed away.
The celebration will offer a welcoming, supportive environment for individuals to honor their mothers while sharing memories and personal experiences with others who understand their pain, according to Ayanna Nicholson, the founder of Help Hearts Heal.
The unique celebration is an opportunity for healing, providing attendees with a safe space to express their emotions, equipping them with resources to navigate their grief journey, while encouraging them to embrace the love and strength that mothers continue to offer, even after they are gone, she said.
“Mother’s Day can be a particularly difficult time for those who have experienced the loss of their mothers, and this special Mother’s Day celebration was specifically created to help reshape that narrative,” said Nicholson, who lost her mother suddenly in 2018. “Our mission is to provide community for those who need it most, allowing them to find hope, healing and love after loss.”
Parental loss can significantly impact mental health and well-being, and if left unattended, can lead to depression, prolonged grief disorder, or other mental health issues. Heal Hearts Heal is focused on improving mental health issues associated with grief and loss.
