This week, NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health announced that its emergency department’s (ED) nurses were the recipients of the prestigious Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) Lantern Award.

It is the first time in the public health system’s history that it has received the esteemed honor.

According to a release, the ENA Lantern Award acknowledges ED nurses and their high-quality performances in a number of areas, including leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research.

“I am incredibly proud of South Brooklyn Health’s emergency department nurses, who are leading by example by incorporating evidence-based practice and innovation in emergency care,” said Svetlana Lipyanskaya, chief executive officer for NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health. “Our nurses are the heart of the clinical operation in our brand-new emergency department and are at the forefront of ensuring that our patients receive high quality care.”

As part of the award’s application process, applicants were required to answer both quantitative questions regarding performance and outcome metrics, as well as qualitative questions about noteworthy practices and attributes that exemplify the respective emergency departments.

“It was an honor for me to be part of the Lantern Award work group and provide my contribution to reflect all the work and collaboration nurses perform each and every day in the emergency department,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health Emergency Department Nurse Harijie Lamani. “Our chief nursing officer, Dr. Manjinder Kaur, has set the foundation for this success through the expectation of the nursing team to practice at the highest level of our licensure.”

The award-winning nurses are part of the newly expanded emergency department in the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital, which is located on the South Brooklyn Health campus.

The 371-bed hospital serves around 80,000 emergency visits per year and offers a variety of medical services, including trauma care, pediatrics, general surgery, gynecology, behavioral health and more.

The South Brooklyn Health campus is part of NYC Health + Hospitals, the largest municipal health care system in the U.S., offering 70 patient care locations throughout NYC and serving over a million New Yorkers each year.
