NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health on Tuesday named Selwena R. Brewster, MD, MBA as its new Chief Medical Officer.
Brewster now oversees clinical operations, leads the medical staff, shapes clinical policy, manages medical budgets, and ensures full compliance with all regulatory standards. Her appointment took effect Nov. 7, following the early-2025 retirement of longtime CMO Dr. Terence Brady.

Across her years with South Brooklyn Health and the NYC Health + Hospitals system, she has driven major improvements in clinical quality, patient outcomes and care delivery.
Her tenure as Associate Chief Medical Officer at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County further demonstrated her ability to build system-wide solutions and lead large interdisciplinary teams.
She is widely regarded for her expertise in Quality, Risk Management, Patient Safety, Ethics, and Peer Review. Her leadership has helped create structures that support accountability, transparency and continuous improvement. She has also advanced throughput and capacity strategies that shorten hospital stays, boost efficiency and support timely, coordinated patient care.
Alongside her new CMO duties, Dr. Brewster will continue serving as Interim Chief Quality Officer. She earned her medical degree from Ross University, completed an Internal Medicine residency at the University of Connecticut and trained in Emergency Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She is a graduate of the PAGNY Physician Leadership Program, a Certified Management Coach and holds a Physician Executive MBA from the University of Tennessee.
