The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will spray pesticides in parts of Brooklyn on Tuesday to curb mosquito activity and reduce the risk of West Nile virus.
Spraying is scheduled to begin on Sept. 16, between 8:30pm and 6:00am, the following morning, weather permitting. If conditions are poor, the work will be delayed until Wednesday, Sept. 17, during the same hours.
Brooklyn neighborhoods scheduled for spraying include: Bedford-Stuyvesant, Broadway Junction, Broadway Triangle, Brownsville, Bushwick, Crown Heights, Cypress Hills, East New York, East Williamsburg, Greenpoint, New Lots, South Williamsburg and Williamsburg.
Boundaries run from the East River on the west to Euclid and Pennsylvania Avenues on the east, and from Greenpoint Avenue and Newtown Creek on the north to Pitkin Avenue, Flushing Avenue, and the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway on the south.
The department will use low concentrations of Anvil, Duet or MERUS 3. Health officials note that risks to people and pets are low, but those with respiratory issues or sensitivities may experience short-term irritation.
