Maimonides Midwood Community Hospital has launched a new robotic surgery program, expanding access to minimally invasive surgical care in Brooklyn. The program began in August 2026 and has completed more than 20 procedures to date, according to Maimonides Health.
The program uses an advanced robotic surgical system and is currently being used by fellowship-trained specialists in general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, and bariatric surgery.
Robotic-assisted procedures can allow surgeons to operate through smaller incisions and provide enhanced visualization and precision. Maimonides says minimally invasive approaches may also contribute to less pain and faster recovery for appropriate patients.
“Maimonides has been Brooklyn’s premier center for robotic surgery for nearly 25 years, with a strong record of excellence and innovation across disciplines,” said Jeffrey Nicastro, MD, FACS, vice chair of surgery and director of adult critical care, Maimonides Medical Center. “This expansion to Midwood builds upon the success of that program, making the most cutting-edge surgical capabilities more accessible in Brooklyn than ever before.”
The launch extends Maimonides Health's longstanding experience with robotic surgery to its Midwood community hospital. Maimonides Medical Center began offering robotic-assisted surgery in 2001, when its urologic surgery team became the first in Brooklyn to provide the technology.
The health system has since expanded robotic procedures across several specialties, including general, gynecologic, bariatric, colorectal, orthopedic, pediatric, thoracic and urologic surgery.
Maimonides Medical Center's broader robotic surgery program has been designated a Robotic Center of Excellence by the Surgical Review Corporation. The hospital system also says its surgeons have performed minimally invasive robotic procedures for more than two decades.
The Midwood program is expected to expand as the hospital develops additional robotic procedures and specialties. Maimonides says the initiative is part of a broader expansion of specialty and outpatient services in Midwood, with the goal of making more specialized care available closer to where Brooklyn residents live.
