South Brooklyn Health's Emergency Department nurses received the prestigious Emergency Nurses Association Lantern Award. The emergency department nurses were the first in the public health system's history to receive the award based on performance in leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research.

“Our Emergency Department, the dedicated team that serves as the lifeline for countless individuals in their times of greatest need, has achieved an extraordinary milestone: the Emergency Nurses Association Lantern Award,” said Dr. Manjinder Kaur, Chief Nursing Officer of NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health. “We’re the first in the NYC Health + Hospitals to achieve this recognition. This acknowledgement of excellence has been provided to just 53 hospitals worldwide, which is amazing when you consider the United States alone has over six thousand hospitals.”

The Emergency Nurses Association has over 50,000 members worldwide. Their mission is to advance excellence in emergency nursing, with core values of collaboration, compassion, diversity and inclusion, excellence, a culture of inquiry, honesty, and integrity, and a spirit of philanthropy.

“It is an especially wonderful time to recognize our emergency department nurses as we celebrate National Emergency Nurses Week, which was established to honor the exceptional contributions of emergency nurses and to raise awareness about the pivotal role they play in health care,” said Svetlana Lipyanskaya, Chief Executive Officer of NYC Health + Hospitals, South Brooklyn Health. “Our nurses are the heart of the clinical operation in our brand-new emergency department and are at the forefront of ensuring that our patients receive high-quality care.”

The newly elevated and expanded emergency department in the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital on the South Brooklyn Health campus sees about 90,000 emergency visits per year. The Lantern Award distinguishes the South Brooklyn Health team for their commitment to quality, safety, a healthy work environment, innovation, and excellence in nursing practice and leaders in emergency care.
