Call for Writers: The Billie Announces a Special Edition of the ?50in50? Monologue Series

In an email letter from Indira Etwaroo, executive director of The Billie Holiday Theatre, she announced a call for writers to participate in a special edition of the theatre's popular monologue series 50in50, a showcase of 50 original monologues on the black woman experience.

The new edition is titled, "Love in the Time of Corona," borrowing from Colombian Nobel prize winning author Gabriel García Márquez's Love in the Time of Cholera.

"To mark this complex, ever-evolving, and unprecedented moment in our shared global history, The Billie welcomes short stories from all people from all walks of life from across the world to share how an act of love is guiding them through this global pandemic," Etwaroo wrote in her letter. "Stories will be selected and read by renowned actors on Facebook Live."

"Our #StayatHome Reading Series, in direct response to the COVID-19 pandemic, has brought together artists from around the country to present online readings for more than 37,500 viewers and over 3,700 comments from around the world that have inspired us."

"Arts institutions across the world are experiencing economic challenges and The Billie is no different. We are facing a 17% loss in our overall fiscal year revenue budget due to incurred expenses and earned income losses of ticket sales, space rentals and other earned income from the COVID-19 pandemic," said Etwaroo.

"And while I am cognizant that our years of operating within the tightest of budgets and the narrowest of margins has given us unique skills and models to navigate this crisis, like most institutions of color across the country, I am alert to the increased vulnerability of this time and the potential disruption to an institutional model that has been moving from surviving to thriving.

"For now, please know that - no matter what - we are going to tell stories that matter to you. For artists and audiences from around the corner and around the world who look to challenge injustices and convene new, unapologetic voices to create a rigorous space that forces social change… welcome home. We will see you online at TheBillieHoliday.org until we meet again in Bed-Stuy."
