Frutango Juice Bar has opened their doors in Flatbush, reports Black Enterprise. The Haitian-owned juice bar, created by Dr. Djenane Bartholomew and Dexter Bartholomew, offers Flatbush locals juice and smoothie options with no additional additives or sugars.
The small business's goal is to provide Flatbush’s Caribbean community with healthy and tasty options while helping to combat the disproportionate levels of hypertension and diabetes affecting Black communities through nutrition. In addition to this, the storefront is also committed to creating an educational experience for customers to learn about the ingredients they are ingesting.
The founders have also incorporated their Haitian roots into their business practice, using traditional ingredients from Haiti such as ginger, turmeric and lemon.
"Back home we are used to a lot of sugar in the production of our juices,” stated Djenane. Currently, one in three Caribbean children is estimated to be obese or overweight, which leads to medical issues in childhood and adulthood including type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.
“We worked with a consultant to develop juices and flavors for a Caribbean community that are both healthy and flavourful,” Dexter added. “As we are introducing juicing into this community the ingredients have to resonate with our customers, feel like home, and taste like home."
Whether you are interested in a juice, smoothie or a total cleanse package, Frutango sells it all including all-natural juices, smoothies, super-food lattes, coffee elixirs, acai bowls and wellness shots. While the couple is focusing on their current community impact, the two want to continue to promote a healthier option for their community and use their experience in the franchise industry to open multiple Frutango Juice Bar locations.
The business's product offerings can either be purchased at its retail location on Church Avenue in Brooklyn New York or with delivery services Uber Eats and Grub Hub.
