Fort Greene Park just hosted its most hilarious event of the year: The Great Pupkin, a Halloween costume contest for Brooklyn pooches.
Lupini Bean, whose owners designed a “Princess and the Pea” costume for her, came in first place. She sat pretty in purple atop a towering stack of mattresses. On the bottom, her owner’s face — painted green like a pea — poked through a cut-out hole.
“We’re always annoying her, and so we always joke that she’s the princess and we’re her peas,” Lupini’s owner, Molly McGrath said.
Next, a three-legged dog named Cheeto dressed up as a three-legged stool from IKEA. A friend who joked about Cheeto's uncanny resemblance inspired the costume, which won second place.
Cruz, Max and their furry friends, who sat aboard a homemade "Local Express Train" costume, came in third place. Before The Great Pupkin, the costume was passed between families and used with children. Max’s owners, Dianne Ferrer and Tim Lawson, decided to use it for their dogs.
Fort Greene PUPS, a non-profit run by dog owners and park stewards, put on the event, which is now in its 24th year.
