Philosophy Meets Happy Hour in Brooklyn’s New Sips & Scholars Series

Brooklyn is turning its bars and restaurants into classrooms with the launch of Sips and Scholars, a free public lecture series designed to spark big ideas over drinks.

The Brooklyn Public Library and Brooklyn Institute for Social Research are launching Sips & Scholars, a free public lecture series hosted in bars and restaurants across Brooklyn.

The first event, “What Is Gender? Theorizing Sexual Difference from Simone de Beauvoir to Judith Butler,” features Professor Hannah Leffingwell. She will trace the development of gender theory from foundational texts by Simone de Beauvoir Judith Butler and Susan Stryker.

The event takes place on Thursday, July 17 at 6:30pm at The Bush (333 Troutman St.) in Bushwick.

Revolution and Underdevelopment: Walter Rodney’s African Perspective with Nara Roberta Silva — Thursday, Aug. 14, at TriniJam BK (Canarsie).

Too Many Wives: Polygamist Nightmares in Gogol’s Ivan Fyodorovich Shponka and His Aunt with Ruth Averbach — Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Freak Bar (Coney Island).
