The Bushwick Collective Block Party drew thousands of people to Troutman Street on May 30 to celebrate the diverse art and music community of Brooklyn.
The annual event included live painting, local food vendors and performances and many families, residents and visitors from around the world gathered to experience the unique atmosphere that has made the Bushwick Collective an international destination for street art.
This year’s festivities included a set from legendary rapper and host of the hit podcast Drink Champs, N.O.R.E. (Noreaga), bringing decades of Hip-Hop history to the stage. His appearance highlighted the event’s commitment to celebrating visual artists as well as musicians and cultural figures who have shaped New York’s creative identity. Performances also included Tony Touch, Statik Selektah & Friends, NEMS, Lil Dee, Termanology, Honey Bxby, Buckshot and DJ Evil Dee of Black Moon.
The Bushwick Collective was founded in May 2012 by Joseph Ficalora, who became passionate about street art as a way to cope with the loss of his mother. It continues to honor the neighborhood's artistic roots while inspiring a new generation of creators.
“I choose to measure my success by the impact that I make. Impact on my community, my loved ones, and those in need," Ficalora said. "Losing my mother to brain cancer 13 years ago changed my life. I often say it changed it for the worse, but because of the unity I found in the Bushwick Collective, I found it only made me a better person. I'm not perfect by any means but the people that have united to become a global family have empowered me and saved my soul.”
