This Year's DanceAfrica Community Day Kicks off at Restoration Plaza

Attendees experienced the beauty, fashion and culture of African and Diasporic traditions firsthand

DanceAfrica 2026 festivities kicked off on Saturday, May 16, with the annual Community Day celebration at Restoration Plaza in the heart of Bedford-Stuyvesant.

This year’s program celebrated The Billie Holiday Theatre’s Youth Arts Academy and its 30th year participating in DanceAfrica, featuring performances that showcased both traditional and contemporary African dance.

The plaza was filled with creativity, vibrant culture, and community pride, bringing together families, artists, and performers from Brooklyn and beyond. Families, youth and elders mingled freely, creating a welcoming environment where culture was not only celebrated on stage, but shared throughout the plaza.

The colorful fashion and handcrafted art added another layer of authenticity, giving attendees the opportunity to experience and support African and diasporic traditions firsthand. Overall, DanceAfrica 2026 Community Day was a meaningful cultural experience that celebrated identity, resilience and community connection.

The event once again demonstrated why DanceAfrica remains one of Brooklyn’s most respected and anticipated cultural traditions.
