A Brooklyn block will transform into a vibrant celebration of Black creativity and community this month, as Beyond the Black Box (BBB) presents The BBB Block Party! on Saturday, May 17, 2025.

The free, day-long outdoor event will take place on Banker Street between Calyer Street and Meserole Avenue in Greenpoint, beginning at 1:00pm and concluding with sunset performances, according to a press release. Organizers say the festival centers Black voices in a neighborhood where they are often underrepresented in the arts.

Rooted in BBB’s mission to amplify Black artistry and radical imagination, the block party will feature live performances, free dance classes, DJs, Black-owned vendors, and family-friendly activities including an obstacle course bouncy house, tarot readings and jewelry-making stations.

The schedule includes:

1:00pm – 4:00pm: Free dance classes led by acclaimed instructors Tamisha Guy, Claude “CJ” Johnson, and Robert “Silk” Mason (first-come, first-served)

6:00pm: Community breathwork session

6:30pm – 7:30pm: Sunset performances by multidisciplinary artists

Music throughout the day will be curated by DJ Kamaal, with sets by Lovie, K. Tea, and DJ Auntie Spice. Food will be available from Elevate Cater NYC, alongside fresh fruit and cold drinks.

Vendor stalls will showcase Black-owned businesses, artists, and artisans, turning the block into what organizers call “the ultimate cookout.”

Support from Triskelion Arts and KEIGWIN + COMPANY helps bring the event to life as part of a broader effort to foster inclusive and equitable creative spaces in New York City.
