Brooklyn Joins SummerStage Celebration With Music, Dance And Culture

There will be plenty of shows in Bedford Stuyvesant and Coney Island from June through October, part of the City Parks Foundation SummerStage festival.

The City Parks Foundation has announced the return of the Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage festival for its 39th season, bringing a dynamic mix of free live performances to Brooklyn neighborhoods this summer.

In addition to a variety of performances in Central Park, there will be plenty of entertainment at Herbert Von King Park in Bedford-Stuyvesant and the Coney Island Amphitheater, according to a press release. 

The citywide festival will run from June through October, with more than 70 free and benefit performances scheduled across the five boroughs.

Herbert Von King Park will be the stage for high-energy performances, including a July 10 appearance by Big Freedia, the New Orleans bounce music icon, presenting a new gospel/rap/bounce project. She will be joined by Courtney “Balenciaga” Washington and the MasterZ at Work dance troupe, showcasing powerful choreography rooted in the ballroom scene.

On July 12, underground hip-hop artists Roc Marciano and The Alchemist will co-curate MIKE’s Young World V will also perform in Bed-Stuy, spotlighting rising and veteran voices in the genre.

"It's a joy to program a festival that authentically celebrates New York City and the diverse communities we serve," said Erika Elliott, executive artistic director of SummerStage. "We strive each summer to collaborate with artists and curate shows to honor cultural movements, artistic communities, and the current sounds and styles that resonate with New Yorkers."

Coney Island Amphitheater will present six free performances this season, including:

  • June 14: Jazz-funk band Lettuce with rapper Styles P.

  • July 26: GORILLAFEST, a hip-hop showcase presented by local artist NEMS.

  • August 8: Puerto Rican salsa singer Tony Vega.

  • August 16: The Funk Flex Birthday Day Party, a borough-spanning celebration of hip-hop and R&B.

  • October 9: The Yeshiva Boys Choir headlines the annual Chol Hamoed Spectacular.
