WorldPride, the world’s largest LGBTQ+ celebration, is taking over New York City this June, and NYC Pride just announced the star-studded line-up for its official opening ceremony at the Barclays Center on Wednesday, June 26.
Whoopi Goldberg will host the ceremony which is featuring a growing medley of acclaimed speakers and performers, including headliner Cyndi Lauper, iconic performer and longtime ally to the LQBTQIA+ community, soul icon Chaka Khan, R&B singer Ciara, singer/ actor Billy Porter, as well as American Idol singer/ rapper Todrick Hall. Additional performers will be announced in the weeks ahead, NYC Pride stated.
“I’ve been a longtime advocate of the LGBTQIA+ community, and this year marks a pivotal moment within our storied history and fight for equality,” said Goldberg. “Hosting a WorldPride event is an absolute honor, and I am delighted to be a part of the opening ceremony in June.”
WorldPride takes place periodically in cities around the world, since its inaugural festival in Rome in 2000, and is one of the most anticipated celebrations for the LGBTQ+ community. This year, to honor the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, a landmark moment in the queer liberation and gay rights movements in the United States, NYC will play host to what’s destined to be one of the world’s largest gatherings of love, pride and protest.
The proceeds of the opening ceremony at the Barclays Center will support three leading NYC-based LGBTQIA+ organizations: the Ali Forney Center, the largest agency dedicated to LGBTQ homeless youth in the U.S.; SAGE, the world’s oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender seniors through supportive services and resources; and Immigration Equality, the nation’s leading LGBTQ immigrant rights organization, advocating for people from around the world fleeing violence and persecution because of their sexual orientation, gender identity or HIV status.
“In celebration of WorldPride 2019 | Stonewall 50, NYC Pride is dedicated to broadening its commitment to serving the LGBTQIA+ community,” said Chris Frederick, NYC Pride’s executive director. “Every ticket sold to this 10,000-seat event is supporting some of the best service and advocacy work being done in our community.”
