The MLK celebration will begin with conversation with renowned historian and author A. Peter Bailey, followed by the Restauration Dance Ensemble’s moving dance performance
In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., RestorationART presents “Garment of Destiny,” an exhilarating dance performance by the Restoration Dance Youth Ensemble. Under the leadership of internationally renowned artists Ronald K. Brown and Arcell Cabuag, the ensemble will take center stage at the Billie Holiday Theatre in Bedford Stuyvesant, on Monday, January 15.
“The leadership at RestorationART and our Youth Arts Academy continue to reaffirm our commitment to preparing the next generation to carry the torch of revolution and justice forward with great integrity and resolve,” said Dr. Indira Etwaroo, executive director of RestorationART.
The afternoon will begin with a pre-show conversation with renowned historian, lecturer and author A. Peter Bailey, moderated by Dr. Etwaroo. Following the conversation, the Restauration Dance Ensemble will pay a moving tribute to Martin Luther King Jr., choreographed by Brown and Cabuag, as well as veteran choreographers and artists Freddie Moore, Aqura Lacey, Karen Thornton and Shayla Caldwell.
The Restoration Dance Youth Ensemble, comprised of dancers ages 14 – 18, has a strong emphasis on preparing students for college, conservatory and university study through dance. The stunning signature performances offer a new generation of young dancers the opportunity to preserve our rich heritage and look to their role in building on that legacy in the future.
And in the spirit of Dr. King, whose ideals have served as a roadmap to voices of creative expression for generations, the dance concert will be a fitting celebration of his life and legacy.
“This annual MLK performance of the Restoration Dance Youth Ensemble provides our community a moment to come together and remember the history makers who have made the work that we are doing possible,” said Dr. Etwaroo.
