Founded in 1990, the New York Legal Assistance Group provides high quality, free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers who cannot afford attorneys. Our comprehensive range of services includes direct representation, case consultation, advocacy, community education, training, financial counseling, and impact litigation.
NYLAG has a mobile service– The Mobile Legal Help Center, a partnership between the NYLAG and the Access to Justice Program– that makes scheduled neighborhood visits, bringing all of the the legal consultation benefits right to your door. Sponsored by the office of City Councilmember Laurie Cumbo, the mobile help center soon will be paying a visit two locations in Cumbo’s district in Fort Greene and Crown Heights!
Thursday, June 26, from 10:00am – 3:-00pm, the mobile van will be parked right outside of 1 Hanson Place in front of Cumbo’s district office; and on Friday, July 22, the van will be parked at 1650 Bedford Avenue, outside of Medgar Evers College during that same time.

- General Legal Services Handling consumer credit, elder law, employment law, foreclosure prevention, housing, and public benefits cases, including disability, food stamps, home care, and Medicaid/Medicare.
- Immigrant Protection Unit Helping immigrants with citizenship, legal residency, work authorizations, visas, removal defense, public benefits and community outreach.
- Matrimonial and Family Law Advocating on behalf of domestic violence victims. Providing holistic representation in cases of divorce, custody, adoption, visitation, and spousal and child support.
- Housing Preservation Protecting tenants and homeowners by saving homes, keeping housing affordable, fighting for repairs, and enabling longtime residents to stay in their neighborhoods.
- LegalHealth Uniting legal and medical professionals by providing legal services to patients in the medical setting. Educating healthcare professionals on the legal issues affecting patients.
- Special Litigation Unit Serving as a watchdog to ensure that NYLAG’s clients’ rights are protected through class action and other impact lawsuits.
- Storm Response Unit Serving as a first-responder and a longterm provider of legal assistance to victims of Storm Sandy, including FEMA claims, housing, consumer, employment and other benefits.
- Mobile Legal Help Center Expanding access to justice by traveling to low-income neighborhoods and providing advice, legal counseling, and direct representation as well as video conferencing with the courts.
- Special Education Unit Helping parents of disabled children secure fair and appropriate educational placements and services.
- Evelyn Frank Legal Resources Program Helping elderly clients access health care and home care while providing education to professionals serving this population as well.
- Holocaust Compensation Assistance Project Serving the survivor community by providing accurate information and legal assistance regarding compensation and restitution programs.
- LGBTQ Law Project Serving the unique legal needs of the low-income Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender and Queer communities.
- Financial Counseling Advising and educating individuals on budgets and debt management as well as credit analysis and gaining access to banking products
- The Mediation Project Providing free mediation in divorces, child and spousal support, custody/visitation, housing and workplace disputes.
- Total Life Choices Assisting individuals with all their advance planning needs, including Wills, health care proxies and Powers of Attorney.
